Help us send a kid or two to art camp.

Art fills the void.
Swamp Thang fills the dance floor.

This month While Rome Burns welcomes the fabulous Swamp Thang (featuring WRB alum Jennifer Smieja) to the Mississippi Pizza Pub stage along with opening act Root Cellar Duo. We’re raising funds to support Grace Institute’s scholarship program for prospective Grace Art Camp students.

Grace Institute’s signature program, Grace Art Camp, started in 1997,  serves over 1,300 children each year. Guided by the principles of Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, and Receptivity, and that all people are inherently creative, the Institute’s mission is to nurture the human spirit through the arts.
Grace Institute is committed to serving children and families from as many backgrounds and situations as possible.  Each year the Institute offers full and partial camp scholarships to families at 1 to 3.5 times the federal poverty level (or less). Increased efforts to partner with agencies such as Oregon Department of Human Services and Human Solutions have resulted in an increased need forscholarship (add in) funds. Last year, seven percent of campers attended camp on a full or partial award, and the need is even greater this year because we had to raise tuition to cover increasing operating costs.  Cost for one camper for one week of Grace Art Camp’s 23rdsummer camp is $375.

Swamp Thang is a 5-piece band from Portland OR playing Swampy Soul and Rock & Roll in the Zydeco tradition. Just over a year into their exciting new collaboration, the band is redefining the Zydeco genre expectations. With their unique mix of Zydeco, blues, rock & soul – Swamp Thang brings together some of the most eclectic musicians Portland has to offer (at least that’s what their Mee-Maw said). The crowd pleasing band is featured regularly on the 4th Wednesday of the month for the Cascade Zydeco Association dances at the Secret Society Ballroom.

Root Cellar Duo is a classic Portland old school American roots band performing food themed songs. The dup includes singer/guitarist Lowell John Mitchell and Portland harmonica master Aaron Lowe, a stalwart of the local blues/country/traditional jazz/jug band music scene.
