This month While Rome Burns continues in our efforts to support local community-based organizations whose mission is to provide support for folks experiencing food insecurity. According to the Oregon Food Bank, The rate of food insecurity (being without access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food) in Oregon is 14.6%. About 552,900 Oregonians are food insecure, of those 194,070 are children. About 72% of the people who receive food have incomes below the federal poverty level.
Free Food Ministries has been providing healthy food to any and all comers for several years, and we want to help them continue and grow that mission. To that end we’ll be featuring a couple of Portland’s finest acts at our regular last-Sunday soirée: The Lone Fir Hot Club (Gypsy Jazz), and finger-style guitar aficionado Doug Shafer. You won’t want to miss it!

Free Food Ministries
Free Food Ministries was established in 2016 to help feed individuals and families in Washington County and beyond. A small group of volunteers helps run the food pantry on a daily basis, feeding in excess of 500 families and individuals per week. Food is provided freely and openly to one and all. Lone Fir Hot Club
While Lone Fir Hot Club is a new project to the Portland swing & jazz scene, the players of LFHC are not. Decades of musical experience in pretty much any genre one could name has led the LFHC directly to Le Jazz Hot – the classic acoustic style of jazz (no drum set, no electric bass or electric guitar, no brass) popularized by giants of the form such as Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Stephane Grappelli. If you like “Gypsy Jazz” (and who doesn’t?), you’re gonna love the Lone Fir Hot Club!

Doug Shafer
A long-time denizen of the more eclectic side of the Portland music scene, Doug Shafer has been regaling audiences with his vast repertoire of music from around the globe. With his pan-Mediterranean world-beatnik jazz band Hurqalya to the prohibition era blues, early jazz, and ragtime of Smut City Jellyroll Society, Doug has established an independent and singular position in Portland’s music scene. Tonight, Mr. Shafer will be mining the vein of traditional American music – blues, jazz, ragtime, jugband and folk – as he demonstrates his mastery of finger-style guitar.
